Job Title: COTA - Full Time
Job Description: The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) is responsible for providing professional occupational therapy assistance and coordinates patient health care services in conjunction with a licensed Occupational Therapist to ensure a safe environment and in accordance with State, and Federal and Home Health policies and procedures. Provides supervisory support to ensure effective and efficient operations of departmental services.
Job Prerequisites: EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

1. High school graduate or equivalent.

2. Satisfactory completion of Physical Therapy Aide/Occupational Therapy Aide Competency Evaluation and Job Training.

3. Minimum of one-year experience as a Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy Aide is recommended.

4. Current CPR (basic life support) certification.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

1. Able to read and communicate effectively in English.

2. Able to write accurately in English.

3. Basic computer knowledge.

4. General awareness of physical medicine, physical therapy and occupational therapy physical agent modalities, anatomy and physiology.

5. Basic knowledge of physical therapy and occupational therapy machine operation, maintenance and repairs of same.
Job Responsibilities: 1. Provides specific treatment only as directed by the staff physical therapist or occupational therapist. Adheres to standards of physical medicine practice for patients on Med/Surg/Telemetry Unit, Long Term Care and Outpatient Services.

2. Monitors vital signs, maintains adequate knowledge base regarding cardiovascular and respiratory precautions for the patient undergoing physical medicine services and treatments.

3. Maintains patient medical record forms, evaluations and educational handout distribution material. Assists in record keeping of patient files and their charges.

4. Communicates any changes in condition (physical or mental) to staff physical therapist, nursing and other facility personnel, as appropriate.

5. Orders, stocks and maintains accurate records of adaptive equipment.

6. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family.

7. Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Maintains departmental cleanliness and safety.

8. Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.

9. Transports patients according to scheduled appointment times; maintains compliance with safety policies during transport at all times.

10. Prepares and cleans treatment area for patient use consistently. Performs final cleaning at close of department, in preparation for first morning patient.

11. Records treatment/service revisions in accordance with department policy.

12. Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.

13. Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.

14. Consults other departments as appropriate to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.

15. Participates in and maintains Quality Improvement activities for department and organizational QI activities.

16. Meets current documentation standards and policies.

17. Participates in educational staff performance improvement in-services. Assists with orientation and in-service training for certified department staff members. Participates in guidance and e3ducation programs.

18. Participates in infections control, departmental equipment training and organizational safety and fire safety programs.

19. Scheduling outpatient and inpatient appointments.

20. Answering phones and taking messages.

21. Sending and receiving faxes from physicians.

22. Obtains pre-authorization from insurance companies for therapy.

23. Enters daily charges for treatments rendered by PT and OT departments and equipment issued to the patient by the treating therapist.

24. Photocopies records for the Business Office.

25. Types and submits Medicaid PARS.

26. Calculates month end statistics.

27. Checks temperatures on paraffin bath, hydroculator tank, refrigerator/freezer on a daily basis.

28. Compiles monthly ICD-9 code lists and month-end Medicare forms for the Business office.

29. Obtains patient’s signatures for OPS recurring accounts.

30. Orders, inventories and stocks Rehab supplies.

31. Distributes 3-day notices for LTC patients.

32. Pulls and refills patient charts.

33. Monitors patient’s Rx expiration dates.
